Latin honors in UP Diliman

8:28 AM

Hey Isko/Iska! How are you doing?

You must be reading this blog because of this dilemma: to graduate with honors or not. Just to share, during my last undergrad year, I was so distressed about my academic standing (since I'm a transferee from other UP unit). I even scanned and read guidelines, handbooks, and some blogs to keep me worry free. Since I know how you feel, I hope this post will be able to address your questions re latin honors in UP Diliman. You can also read this article from the Office of University Registrar as a starter.

1. What is the basis for graduating with latin honors in UP Diliman?
- As far as I know, it is based on your Curriculum Weighted Average (CWA) and not your General Weighted Average (GWA). GWA is used to assess your performance in one semester; while CWA is used to evaluate your academic performance in N years of studying one undergraduate course.

2. How to compute for CWA?
- You can use this GWA calculator where you can calculate both your GWA and CWA. This is really helpful in tracking your academic standing.

3. How can I compute my CWA if I'm a shiftee/ transferee?
- Just include in the computation all credited subjects from your past degree program to your new curriculum.

4. I have failed grades on my past degree program; are those also included in the computation of CWA?
- If that failed subject is required on your new degree program, it has to be included in the computation of your CWA.

Example:
First take: Chem 16 - 5.00
Second take: Chem 16 - 1.75

If Chem 16 is required on your new course, you need to include all the grades you've got from your first and second take.

5. What will happen if I have an underloaded semester?
- This is really difficult to solve since UP is very strict when it comes to underloading. You have to make an appeal and the faculty has to deliberate whether you will graduate with honors or not. Even if you have a very good reason for underloading, it will not guarantee your spot. So remember, DO NOT UNDERLOAD! If you already did, pray that they will be softhearted enough to allow you to graduate with latin honor.

Hopefully this post helps you! Share your thoughts by commenting below. Good luck on your journey. Remember, grades do not define you but surely will help you land a good job and get started with your professional career.

Padayon!

    1. Hi Janella,

I'm sorry for this late reply but yes you can. Basta wala kang underloaded sem, and nameet mo yung requirements ng college for latin honors.

    1. Hi! What do you mean by bridge courses? If kinuha mo lang siya dahil gusto mong kunin and di required sa curriculum mo, for sure di siya kasama sa CWA. Talagang kasama siya sa computation ng GWA kase ang GWA ay semestral grade :)

  4. Hello! Pwede pa po ba mag latin honors kung may INC? As long as ma-complete ko within 1 academic year?

  5. What if I took, for example:

    Eng 11- 5.0
    Eng 1- 1.25

for a GE, will the Eng 11 grade be included in my CWA if it's not really required but a free choice?

    1. If it's a free choice, it will not be included in your CWA :) But you have to make sure na di talaga siya kasama. Kase may cases na if you need 5 GEs, then dalawa lang yung nirequire sayo (i.e. Eng 1, CW 10) then free choice na ung tatlo. Then naibagsak mo ung isa sa tatlo, and you took another GE in replacement nung naibagsak mo, chances are kasama sa computation ng CWA ung naibagsak mo. Kausapin mo na lang admin niyo about this :)

  6. Hello! I have several concerns:

    1. I'm a third year student shifting from a 5-year course (MatE) to a 4-year course (MBB). Because I'm shifting quite late, I may take 2 or 2.5 more years to complete everything in my new course for a total of 5-5.5 years. I'm wondering: can I still be a candidate for latin honors even if I'm delayed due to shifting?
    2. Can latin honor candidates have DRP classes? I dropped 2 classes in my previous sems in UP (1 PE and 1 class na required for MatE pero di kasama sa MBB curriculum). Di naman ako underloaded in both cases.

    1. By the way, hypothetical lang po ito since di pa ako graduating, I'm just trying as best as I can to aim for latin honors to help increase my post-undergrad options.

    2. Hi! As long as wala kang underloaded na sem, kahit madelay ka sa graduation and okay yung grades mo, pwede ka pa ring grumaduate with latin honors. Actually ako it took me 6 years - 2 years sa dati kong course, 4 years sa bachelor's degree ko and still grumaduate ako with latin honors.

Ang alam ko pwede ka pa ring magkaroon ng latin honors kahit may DRP classes ka. Basta golden rule huwag kang mag-underload :)

  7. Hello! ^_^
May chance pa po bang makagraduate with latin honors kung made-delay dahil sa thesis? As of now po pasok naman yung CWA ko para maging cum laude, kaso S po ako sa thesis. Thank you

    1. I think oo as long as pasok ung CWA mo. Better ask na lang ung admin para sure :)

  8. Hi. Paano kinocompute sa CWA kapag nag-retake ng (failed) subject? Kinukuha ba yung average grade (singko & pasadong grade)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If required sa curriculum mo ung failed subject, kasama sa computation ung grade mo sa unang take. Ang alam ko hindi siya inaaverage. Itetreat mo siya as separate grades

  9. Hi! Can I still graduate with honors if I failed my NSTP or PE?

    1. I think yes, as long as you take it again or take another PE class to satisfy your curriculum requirements. Pero just to be sure lang, kindly ask the admin.

  10. Your GWA calculator is very nice!!
Just a comment on underloading - there are at least 3 reasons accepted for underloading but you need to indicate/apply this during the semester you incur the underload (see: https://our.upd.edu.ph/files/acadinfo/ACADEMIC%20LOAD%20.pdf)

  11. Hello! I took 12 units from my home unit (UPD) , and additional 5 units from the other UP campus, is that considered underloaded? Can I still graduate with honors? Huehue Thank you in advance! ❤️

    1. Hi! I think you have to ask your college admin; make sure na ung additional 5 units from the other UP campus ay credited for that sem.

  12. Hello! Transferee po ako to upd from upm. On my last semester at upm, i took 12 units sa upm and nag-cross register ako ng additional 6 units sa upd pero yung additional units na yun ay outside of my program sa upm. Credited sana siya sa lilipatan kong program sa upd, pero due to some reasons, di ako nakapag-apply dun sa program na yun sa upd. I got accepted here at upd but in a different program, kaya di rin credited yung na-crossreg ko. Concern ko lang ay kung pwede pa rin akong mag-run for honors? Kasi never naman akong na-underload huhu

    1. Hello! Ang tanong siguro if credited ung 6 units na crinoss-reg mo sa UPD nung sem na yun (kahit hindi siya kasama sa curriculum). If not, baka nga underloaded ka. You have to ask your college admin sa UPD (or better siguro ng UPM) about this para makasiguro ka.

  13. Hello po, I just want to ask, if considered po ba na underload if 12 academic units + P.E. (2 units) + NSTP 1 (3 units), a total of 17 units but just 12 academic units. Pwede pa rin po kaya ako grumaduate with latin honors if that is the case? Hope to receive a reply, thanl you!

  14. Hello po. Planning to transfer sa UPD from UPLB, and I read that to graduate with honors, you should finish atleast 75% of your total academic units from your new course. If I will happen to pursue transferring, my possible credited units will take almost 30% of my total academic units on my prospected course. Is this rule still strictly implemented? Can you give me an idea of how many units were credited on your new course po noon, and what is your total academic units niyo noon? Huhuhuhu

  15. Hello po. I'm a shiftee po kasi, I just want to ask kung paano magcompute ng GWA considering na may mga subject ako that was allowed for substitution.

    Ex.
I substituted one subject with 5units to another subject with 3units.
I substituted 2 subjects with a total of 10 units to a 5 unit subject.

  16. Hello! Alam niyo po ba kung paano nagcocompute ng CWA kung lumampas sa required GEs yung natake? I have 6 SSPs po kasi and 2 yung required sa curriculum ko. Do I have the option na ipacredit yung mas may mataas na grade doon sa 4 na free choice na kinuha ko?

  17. Hi! Will I still be able to graduate with honors even with these 2 situations (both happened)?
    1) I had to DRP one class (but I was 18u when I did that so after my DRP, I still had 15u); and,
    2) Failed 1 class during a 15u sem, so I didn't underload but I only passed 12u out of a 15u sem
